Alternator issues, dead battery....

I have searched and not found the answer to this question.

Background: 1986 M1044, has 60 amp alt, Regulator pooped out, replaced with one from Southern auto. The truck also had the push button light switch. It has a grounding kit installed

Driving one day in the rain, with lights, heater and wipers on, the light switch went haywire, and the voltage regulator started overvolting, about 35-38v. This would come and go. Replaced the regulator, and the light switch, (which was toasted) and it was making 27.5-28v, Life was GOOD!

Then the batteries went dead, checked output (dash gage showed right on the mark) but voltmeter showed low, 23-24v at the battery. Cranked up the pot in the regulator and it only goes to 26v. Also, checked for parasitic load, .02 milliamps, so none.

Update: 5/1/17. now the voltage goes between 36 and 27.6 rpm dependant.

Time for a new alternator?
What might be the issue if not the alt?
