finally figured out that my alternator wasn't charging. Checked voltage on alt and at batteries and only 23.4 vlt. I cleaned grounds at alt and all batt connections and nothing. Searched past post and found where doghead revived a couple of alternators by adjusting that magic screw that I didn't know existed and wow it started working. Thanks for the post Doghead. My question is -is this a short term fix or is it possible it will last a few more years? Now I have 28.4 at the alt but only like 27.4 at the batts. And at these current settings the gauge is in the red. Is this normal and will batts charge at these readings OK? Any help from those more experienced would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks CTMustang

DO you think these readings are ok? I'm kind of parenoid about the gauge being in the red. Also I unhook the positive terminal between the 2 batts. when I park the truck for more than a couple of days to help keep it in the spot I put it does anyone think this will harm the electrical system overtime?

If you getting 27.4v at the batts your fine, something must be wrong with you guage as I get 27.5v at my batts and the guage needle sits right in that little box in the green zone

27.4 volts at the batteries is OK, but if you're reading 28.4 volts at the alt with a meter, and dropping a full volt in the short distance between the alt and the batteries with that big wire, you have a problem somewhere.

If you're reading 28.4 at the alt you should have 28.4 at the batteries as well.

Something is putting a draw on your system to be loosing that volt somewhere, I would start with the obvious, and look at the wires for rubbed through insulation, dirty or corroded connections, and have the batteries tested for a shorted cell.
