Get one out of a salvage truck pull the cable clean and lube it up good and it will last for years. It is not a bad idea to remove the cable from the back of the speedometer every once in a while and shoot some cable lube down in the cable housing. It even works its way up into the speedo head and keeps it smoother and quieter. Also make sure the cable is properly routed / secured and has no hard bents in it and is secure up away from heat sources. Pay attention to ALL the little things and you will not have any other troubles.

Had the same symptoms , would be sometimes good, sometimes make noise and sometimes the needle would bounce. I then took the cable off as described and sprayed it with WD40 and let it run down inside the cable before putting it back on. that cured it.
