And the good news first, she runs! And we'll probably be able to limp her home on her own. We'll have to jury-rig a few things in addition to what we did yesterday on initial inspection.
All the fluids had been drained out, and in thier haste to do so, whoever did it decided to not take out the drain plug of the oil pan, but to punch a hole in it instead
which we fixed by threading a bolt/washer combo in and torquing it down with a wrench. (yes we're sure it's not from somthing inside the engine leaving though the pan, it's an entrance wound not an exit wound)
Also they damaged the drain cock on the radiator when they drained it, making it impossible to close all the way, so we temporary sealed it up with some 5 minute epoxy.
Naturaly, the batteries were gone and the fuel tank was empty so we added the needed ingredients
Once everything was in place, it started right up, we didn't drive it around to check the gears (Tranny/T-case/Diffs all drained of fluid too, and we didn't have enough to top off completely) and we dont' know if a lot of the lights work, but it's safe to say I think that we won't be needing a trailer for this one
Good news - Winch looks good, brake pedal feels hard, air pressure and oil pressure both look good, not many dents, and no more rust than the usual cosmetic surface kind. Engine was overhauled by Mass. Natnl. Guard in 1997.
Bad news - Bad head gasket(s) there was greasy white foam on the oil cap, and the official de-militarizing report (dated 12/03 from Ft. Drum) says that there was coolant in the oil. Corrective action taken listed as "flush and refill" in that they pretended it didn't exsist and sent it to GL before anyone could notice
Aside from that, here's the other stuff we saw wrong or were mentioned in the report
RF headlight broken
RF blackout light broken
Driver's door latch broken
Driver's window cracked
Manifold heater needs rewired
Windshield glass, passenger side, cracked
Both front axle seals bad
Front differential cover loose, water in diff
Transmission output shaft seal bad
Forward rear differential seal bad
Bed missing several cargo strap tie down hooks
Glove box gasket bad
Seats ripped
Instrument panel has faulty gas guage
Air filter
Windshield wipers dryrotted
Passenger side wiper motor broken
RF tire dry rotten (but it has a brand-new spare mounted, lucky us)
Bed missing most of it's bolts, only two bolts, one on each side were holding it on (and they didn't have nuts on them
) but all the missing bolts were quickly found tossed in the cab.
Still, for $2800, it's not bad. He felt good enough about it at least to finaly tell his wife he bought it
Keep ya posted as the situation develops. Depending on when GL gets thier act together and gets the final T crossed on thier paperwork, we could be going back next week for it, or not untill after Thanksgiving. He already has the official paperwork from the Govt allowing him to take possession.
