Cold Timing Advance

How is this supposed to work? When the engine is cold the plunger on the right side of the ip is out and the idle up server is giving it throttle. If I push the plunger in the motor gets a lot quieter. It also seems like when the engine is hot the plunger is in the same outward position. Where is it supposed to be when the engine is hot? out or in?

the plunger is just for a higher idle, it is in the outward postition pushing the throttle when cold.

The plunger controls idle speed. The cold start timing advance is a totally separate item.

I didn't explain it well. It is the part that can be pushed in on the bottom left side (if you are looking towards the back of the truck). It is under the vacuum throttle position valve. It is #4 on this image.

That is part of the throttle system I believe, it will be in the same position when idling, hot or cold.
