cucv m1009 electrical problems

Hi. I have an issue with my m1009. First, when towing a trailer having the lights on after a while approx. 40 min. there is a electrical smell coming from the fuse block, the wires do not heat up but the block does. Is this a common problem with these older vehicles?:?: Also where is the thermal limiter located and could this be a cause of the problem?
