CUCV solenoid & starting problems...again

I tried the search feature but nothing that related to my situation:

I hopped in the M1009 and went to start it but got nothing but a buzzing noise. After a search of possible causes, the solenoid is making noise. Is this a sign of it being bad or is there something else I should check?

Test the volts at the starter, it should be at least 24. If it is than it is the starter. I would take to shop and have them check, and than rebuilt it. It cost alot less than over the counter.

It has to be the Starter, If it tested AT the starter 24 volts. At least it is under warr.From what you wrote, it sounds like the solenoid is not in gauging.
:!: BUT 1st load test the batteries, they can be 12v each and still be bad. 1 or both that is ( can't handle the load from the starter. At least changing a battery is easier than a starter. :)

There is a solenoid which was probably new with your rebuilt starter but there is also a 12 to 24 volt relay under the steering column. It frequently goes bad but most of the time it gets stuck on and fries the starter before you can get it disconnected. I would check to make sure it is working properly. The key should energize the relay in the start position and it should have 24 volts coming in and going out when activated on the switched side. It is on a bracket with two other relays. Did you check to see if you are getting a 24 volts to the start terminal of the solenoid on the starter when someone else the key is held in the start position or did you just check the big wire for 24 volts?

Brand new starter relay installed with no change in results. The solenoid that is making the buzzing sound is the one on the firewall which is the glow plug relay? However, that shouldn't affect the starting should it? That just heats the glow plugs up?

Hope this helps

1 Check 20 amp fuse, Replace if burned out
2 Test voltage of batteries, if not 12.5 charge
3 Load test each battery, should not drop more than 1 -2 volts, if it does replace
4 Inspect lead connections at starter solenoid for corrosion and damage.
5 Check for voltage at purple lead on starter solenoid with key held in start position. If there is voltage, replace the starter. If there is no voltage go to #6
6 Remove starter relay. Turn key to "START" position. Check for voltage at purple/white lead terminal on starter relay connector. If there is voltage, replace relay. If there is no voltage , trace the circuit. See wiring diagram F-1 or F-2 in the 289-20 (TM)

The glow plugs are not on the same circuit and would not cause what you are saying is happening.

Try the troubleshooting in the last post.
1st chance you get you should get the CUCV TM 9-2320-289-20. You will find it a big help, with problems like this.

With everything you said, Have you Load tested each battery?? :?:

When you turn the key to 'START' does the relay under the dash click? Put your finger on it and see if you can feel it click. That will isolate it between the 12V and 24V side pretty easily. You can also jump the relay with a piece of wire, that will eliminate the 12V side completely so if it still doesn't work, the problem is on the 24V side.

Figured it out: bad glow plug solenoid. Simple fix. Here are the symptons for future reference:

Turn the key one click, buzzing noise in solenoid, glow plug light dim. Turn the key to start, grinding noise from solenoid.

You need to check your wiring. The glow plug solenoid should not afect the starter at all.It is 12v and its only purpose is the glow plugs. If it was bad, the starter still cranks over.
So you need to check the wiring, someone or something might have happen to it before you got it (truck).
