Failed Injection Pump Governor Weight Retainer Ring

I was wondering what draw backs are of continuing to run a pump that the retainer ring has disintegrated in? Originally the check valve on top of the pump got clogged, so I broke the glass ball out and put a small filter in so all the little specs wouldn't go into the fuel tank. Its been about 17,000 kilometres (10,500 miles) and it seems that all the crap has been filtered out. The only negatives I have noticed in terms of performance are: 1. seems to idle a little rough 2.when slowing down from highway speeds it surges a little 3. sometimes it seems to lack power on hills. Getting a pump rebuilt here in BC, Canada is about $800, so if this retainer ring failure isn't going to harm my engine in anyway then I would rather not spend that type of money. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The clock is ticking.
Either spend the $$ now for rebuild, or wait until it quits at the worst possible moment.
