Fuel gauge problems

I understand the fuel gauges in these trucks are a problem. Has anyone found a way to treat or clean the sender so it actually gives a decent reading. Does anybody have an opinion if this is a crud problem( some GM cars need an additive to keep the senders working ) or a bad rheostat on the sender. This new format is a PIA.
