I've exhausted my knowledge and looked over the wire diagram and TM's so time to ask for help.

Problem: No Gen 1 light with key in the "on" position on start up

What I know:

no power at the 2 plug brown exciter wire on the Gen 1 with key "on"
no power at the "Gen 1" dash light socket
no power at the gauge cluster connector for the "Gen 1" light

Where I do have 12v with the key "on" is at the exciter brown wire on the INSIDE of firewall coming out of the fuse box.

Heater and fan work and all fuses cleaned

Ground wire on Gen 1 cleaned

So the power goes from the heater/blower fuse on the fuse box TO the gauge and dash light then outside to the Gen?? That means I have a problem between the fuse box and the dash...correct?

Thanks, David

Power for the GEN1 exciter circuit is this:

Power from the Heater fuse. Two brown wires come out of the left hand side of the fuse holder. One for the heater circuit and on going to PIN #5 of the plug for the instrument cluster.

From PIN #5 thru the bulb to PIN #8 of the plug for the instrument cluster.

From PIN#8 to the firewall plug

Passing thru the wirewall plug

From the firewall plug to the GEN1 exciter plug.

You may need to take the firewall plug apart and clean the connections. GM used some type of grease on the connections and over the years it turns into a black goo.

Something else to check. Since the GEN1 circuit shares the same fuse with the heater, a coulple of members have reported that a bad heater switch will cause the GEN1 circuit to not funtion properly.
