General GM diesel engine question

I have a general question about the gm diesel engines used in these trucks, perhaps someone knows the answer. Does the 6.2 or 6.5 diesel share a common block or any other parts with any other gm gas engines? It seems to me there was at one time a way to convert a gas 350 into a diesel, similar to the one Oldsmobile used for awhile. Anybody?

Actually the 350 olds diesel was based on the old 425 gas engine that olds built. but had a new block design to handle the injection pump drive. At first it was a real boat anchor but by the time GM came out with the awsome DX block the damage had been done and you couldn't give them away. the 6.2/6.5 variant were designed as a diesel from the ground up with a little help from Detriot and Isuzu

Isuzu had nothing to do with the 6.2/6.5 (although Detroit Diesel loaned several people to Chevrolet for the 6.2/6.5 program). The current Duramax engine is an Isuzu design, built and "dressed" by GM Powertrain Group.

Sigh...not this again.

The 6.2L/6.5L family came from Detroit Diesel when it was a subsidiary of GM. Sorta like how AAMCo used to be part of GM but now is entirely separate (and even sells axles to Chrysler and others).
Detroit Diesel still makes 6.5L motors and parts for them. Every HMMWV and diesel H1 Hummer had a Detroit Diesel 6.2L or 6.5L in it until the H1 Alpha came out.

Ummm, sorry, DDC never built the 6.2/6.5, although there were some of the guys from DDC (including myself) temporarily assigned to Chevrolet (what later became GM Powertrain) to supervise and design the engine as well as develop it. Powertrain built it until sold off to AMGeneral and the engne is now sold through an AMG subsidery - General Engine Products. See:

http://www.amgeneral.com/vehicles_gep.php

...from the website:

..."The new, modern engine facility went into operation in July 2000. The 6.5 liter engine had been built for many years by General Motors at their Moraine Engine Plant. With GM's technical support, AM General developed the new facility and made numerous improvements to this already reliable power plant.

Besides supplying the engine to AM General as the basic power plant for the military HMMWV and the civilian HUMMER H1, GEP sells the engine to the General Motors Service Parts Organization as a service replacement engine. GEP also supplies the engine to the military as a service engine for existing HMMWVs. Recently the Optimizer 6500 has been used in marine applications.

6.2 = 379 CI 6.5 = 395 CI. Generous Motors Moraine Assy built 10,000 warrany engines prior to closing the line and giving the rights to AM General. The story at Moraine Assy is that Detroit Diesel (then owned by GM) had some input on the design but as BobS said, they were wholly produced by GM at Moraine Assy.
