As I recall, High Lock locks the front & rear drive shafts so that each differential is receiving the same amount of power - don't confuse this with locking the front/rear diffs as the HMMWV has torsen differentials.

This drive range shall be selected only when
continuous wheel slippage is evident; i.e., when
operating in mud, snow, loose sand, or on ice, and
increased control or additional traction is required.
Driving on non slippery conditions with sharp turns especially can damage components. To unbind components after driving in HL, drive backwards in a straight line for 10-15 ft.

Your vehicle has 3 differentials.
2 in the Axle pumpkins and 1 in the transfercase.

HL Position:
Off road driving with some slippage shift to the HL range. This locks the center
differential in the transfercase sending the same power to front
and rear drive lines.

H position:
Normal driving is in the H range.
this allows the front and rear differentials to turn at
different speeds when cornering on hard surfaces:


N Position:
Transfercase is in Neutral, no power delivered
to front or rear drivelines.

L Position:
Low Range Gear set with Lock differential.
Same lock as HL but with lower gear ratio to
keep RPM's in higher torque range when driving on
low traction surfaces.
