Hi all, first time poster long time reader. I’ve had an M998 troop carrier for a couple years and am indebted to the SS community. From simple DIYs to diagnosing the dreaded ATF Vampire (thankfully early on), I’ve learned a lot from you so thanks and here to return the favor over the course of my next posts.
I’ve done many of the common upgrades like winch, ignition lock, battery cutoff lock, rearview cam, charging ports and cigarette lighter but also a couple more experimental things; mounted center console, mounted job box, and simple upgrades like cheap plastic cupholders that are the perfect sizes. This post will share info on what’s been an effective arm rest/center console for me.

Items list:
- 50 cal ammo can
- mini padlock
- SWAG Off Road 50 Cal Ammo Can Mount Only https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LBFQ656/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
- MTM Ammo Can Organizer (Black) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0074024OO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
The ammo can mount is overpriced at $60 but it’s an effective way to lock the box down without having to fabricate something myself. Likewise I could have just mounted the ammo can straight to the truck but I like the option of portability.
I decided not to add cupholders to it since I found other great places for them (I’ll do another post) and thought the ammo can was almost too small as an armrest without the added cutout or mounted plastic holders.
I used strong magnets to hold the ammo can organizer a couple inches above the bottom so I can use the bottom as a junk drawer and for larger items without covering the organizer compartments that now sit above. I also have a pad/pillow with magnets under the fabric which I magnetize to the top of the can for an armrest pad. It’s nice and cushy but don't use it anymore since it’s comfortable without too.
I also use a padlock on the ammo can since doors are open and I have registration stowed in there.
