Lazy Alternator

I was going to start a thread about my lazy passenger side alternator but it just up and died. Before it died it would need a little kick up in rpm before it would start charging. I have read that is normal. It would then take up to 5 minutes for it to reach 13.7 volts. Drivers side would always stay at 14.4 volts. I WAS going to ask if this was normal. Guess it's not.

Big plans to drive the CUCV around on the 4th went south on the evening of the 3rd. Didn't notice the volt meter in the yellow and after I stopped in to see a friend of mine, it would not crank. After a big hassle jump starting this thing, I was ready to ditch the passenger side alternator and convert it to 12 volts. Still not sure if that may not happen but since I'm currently broke, I pulled the alt and took it apart. Couldn't find much wrong inside so I headed to my local rebuilders shop and had them test my voltage regulator. Working good. I don't have an adjustable charger so I could not perform the test found in the TM.

Decided to clean up all the connections inside and take some emory cloth to the slip rings.

Reassembled it and it's charging better than it ever has.

Seems I remember reading somewhere that if it's electric, clean it.

Good advise indeed.
