I'm working on a 1984 M1009 that will be my boys high school truck. An opportunity for them to learn a little bit about how to work on cars and all that. We're not trying to keep it all original so a few upgrades happening. Anyways, we've done quite a bit of work already including replacing the engine (original was locked up from being in a flood) and I wanted to verify we didn't have fuel tank issues, and it turns out we do. Looking over the forums I don't think anyone here is surprised by that. The tank had a patch that came off merely by touching it - revealing a hole I could put my finger through. And I stopped counting pinhole size rust holes at somewhere around two dozen. Also, the fuel filler neck elbow makes a fantastic fuel system drain as it has a 3 inch rusted out hole in it. So, we need a new tank and a new filler neck. Looking over the forums it looks like the larger 31 gallon tank is a possible upgrade path here. I'll be buying from LMC and just wanted to make a list of what I need.
31 gallon tank - part number 32-5947
Filler neck - part number 32-3322
Tank strap set - part number 32-5822
Tank anti-squeak set - part number 32-5816
Tank Lock ring/O-ring - part number 30-1290
Sending unit - part number 32-4072
Fuel Filler Hose - part number 32-3328
Fuel Tank Vent Hose - part number 32-1953
I haven't inspected the hard lines yet - i wasn't anticipating an issue with hard lines (just blow them out with compressed air) but i'm new to old diesels and didn't realize how much more susceptible to rust (in the fuel system) they can be so that may be next on my list. I have a parts rig (sadly with also rusted fuel system items) so I think I can replace some of my bumper hardware that broke during removal. I was definitely surprised by the fuel system rust as the body is surprisingly rust free (the flood it got caught in only lasted a couple of days - and got just high enough to get in the motor).
Here is a photo of the boys with the truck a couple of weekends ago. Twins - Grey under the truck, Reese at the front.
Anything you guys would add to the list? Any advice on this part of the project? Thanks!
