Hey y'all,
Been out of the 5 ton world for several years, owned a couple 818's but about to purchase what I think is an M54A2, owner says it's a 68 with the multifuel and whistler turbo. Won't bore you with how much I've wanted another 5 ton so I'll get right to it.
Runs and brakes well, Owner says it can be shifted into gear with truck turned off, and clutch will hold when it's running, but it won't shift without an excessive amount of slamming it into gear while running. He's pretty sure it needs a new throw-out bearing, and after reading a few threads here I'd agree. It needs a few other things but this is the major repair I'd be wanting to tackle right off the bat so it's more or less roadworthy.
What I'm asking here is how similar is the transmission in an M54A2 compared to the one in 809 series? I've got a winch hoist rigged up similar to what I read about in a post from 2009 by 70Deuce, and I assume this truck will be the same process as an 809 series for replacing the throwout bearing, just want to make sure I'm not in for any surprises. Thanks!
