ok,Seriously interested in that Yeller wrecker that Wreckerman found but I got a few questions.Does anyone know a loop hole that will allow me to put antique tags or equivilant on it in Alabama? The guidelines show 26,000Lbs GVW and less which pretty much GVW is Curb wieght with full load of fuel and driver since you cannot carry a payload with Antique tags anyway. But the M62 is 33K plus some change. Also,Looking for a picture of how said truck would tow a deuce safely.I REALLY want this truck but if I have to get Commercial tags for it,then I can't get it.Plus with Commercial tags I think I might have trouble by not having my CDL.

Freight Train,

I work for the Idaho State Police and I do inspections on commercial vehicles. I did a little research but I couldn’t find any good news.
I looked at Section 40-12-248 of Alabama code it talks about the registration fees. If I understand the section it would cost you $520 to register between 33000 to 42000 pounds, Ouch! Also Section 32-6-58 stated vehicles 33000 pounds and over have to show proof that the federal heavy vehicle excise tax is paid.

In Idaho the antique plates are so restrictive it makes the truck almost useless, Alabama seems about the same. I haul a lot with my deuce so I register it with non-commercial truck plates for 26000 and my Dodge 3500 for 16000. My deuce costs me about $120 a year.

Another option to look into is trip permits. In Idaho I can purchase a trip permit for a certain number of days for whatever weight I want instead of registering it. I can also up the weight for a registered vehicle. A lot of farmers don’t register their trucks they just buy trip permits during the harvest season. The down side is if you use your truck a lot it is more expensive. I can also get the permits on line.

I would suggest contacting your local State Police Commercial Vehicle Specialist or DOT inspector, most will be more than happy to help. Of all people they would know of any exemptions.

As long as you don’t use your truck for any compensation you don’t need a CDL. There are a few states that have a special license for larger vehicles, California comes to mind. The problem is some police officers don’t know that, and arguing with an officer usually doesn’t do you any good.. I worry that I might be stopped in another state by someone that doesn’t know the law and will have to go to court to prove my point, I will probably get a CDL in the near future. Below is a quote I found in regards to an Alabama CDL exemption, it is the same as in Idaho and almost every other state.
Are there any exemptions to being required to have Alabama CDL?
Yes, a few . . .
1. Active Duty Military . . . with military licenses operating military vehicles.
2. Firefighters . . . meeting approved training standards and operating authorized emergency vehicles.
3. Farmers . . . in certain cases.
4. Individuals ....operating motor homes or other vehicles used exclusively to transport personal possessions or family members, for nonbusiness purposes

I hope this helps I have a tendency to ramble on.

i am going to get my M816 legal this summer, i havnt check about the antique tags yet, but i plan to and hope can use them, im down here in louisiana, and in this mudland i know a off road wrecker would be nice to have. i dont want to make a forture off it, but some to offset the fuel and expenses. i am not going into the wrecker bussinse but mostly moving heavy stuff and stuck tractors and tract hoes. i already have a friend that needs me to pick up his sail boat after repairs to put it back on his trailer.

The only other thing I can think of is see if you can be considered a farmer, there might be some exemption for farmers. I know Idaho has a ton.

That’s too funny. I live in a small town (900) I have been thinking of planting some pine trees in the back and try to be considered a tree farm. When I finally get to move out of town I will be doing just that. By the way I love the avatar.

I know what you mean. The big green truck is about as good ofa no trespassing sigh as my black and white. I always clean my weapons in the driveway, stinks up the house. I have been trying to convince my wife a 105 howitzer would look good in the front yard.

Drug dealers can pretty much be counted on to be excellent neighbors - They don't want any trouble / attention brought their way! It's their customers you've got to worry about... Breaking into your car, stealing anything not cemented down.

Freight Train - Why did you get discouraged from rescuing Old Yeller? You wouldn't need a CDL, you would fall under #4 in PWM's post... and $520/year? I guess that's a lot of money, but you fellas ought to feel lucky. To register a 33,000lb wrecker as commercial in CA would probably cost three times that much. Here, we would be able to register it Historic though... There is no weight restriction.

I'd just like to see Old Yeller saved. I'd love to get it, but the shipping would kill me.

Regards,
Jon

Hope isn't gone yet.I am gonna call the DMV or whoever about tags and see if there is anything they can do for me.I hate to see any vehicle killed.Even a cute little Yugo.I bought a lot of 5 from one guy in hopes to save them but alas, the paperwork was so screwed up I never would have been able to and sent them to their graves.

I don't think they check on you owning a farm , just register it with farm tags . They don't inforce it they just register it , I live in the city and registered a truck with farm tags before . They don't have any idea where it's gonna be used or on who's farm it's on ! If you think they'll question it just go to a DMV out in a more rural area . Mark

Heck, does anyone even know if the truck is still available or GULP intact?I did a little thinking and I want it.Found out that I won't have to pay federal crap per the Alabama tag guy(the Head man on the state level not a local).Said 55,000Lbs or more is where Alabama requires the taxes to be paid before they will issue a tag but I am gonna start bugging my Legislature guy about adding Historic Military Vehicles to the Firetruck exemption.
