M816 Hyd Filter

Anyone know how to clean the hydraulic filter on a M816 wrecker? The indicator on the filter housing says "clean filter", and I don't want to ruin a $100+ filter by improper cleaning. The manuals on site offer no guidance on the subject. Thanks.

Thanks for the help. I think i'll drain the oil into a clean drum, just to be safe since I dont know the condition of the valve.
