..... the wheel ends are different between 1976 and 1977.
Exactly that is what I was told (and yet had to confirm): that there are at least two different hub designs, and that the bearings are not the same, for both. Also, the brake shoes on one are 2.5" wide and the other one has 3" shoes.
Fact is that the std drums that came with 2.5" will accept 3.0", as well.

NAVFAC conversion of a 2wd to a 4wd, perhaps?

Regardless of what it turns out to be, it is a very nice looking truck.

The dana 60 and 70 are very similar in appearance...
True, but it's relatively easy to tell them apart since there is a significant difference in size, besides the "70" cast in the housing
(And contrary to what many say, their covers are not interchangeable - even if the bolt pattern is the same for both)

I pulled out my "Wheels" chrysler M880/890-series manual and according to that they were spec'd with the dana 60, however as NDT and Gringeltaube mentioned, there are differences between 1975- dated axles, '76 , and '77 ... As I previously mentioned, I did have an M880 with a dana 70, for whatever reason it was there

Attached are parts pages from the Wheels manual, I would not doubt there are other differences that the parts book does not show

Vin listed starts out as a 1979 D200. The weight indicates 2wd.
Actual M880's were 1976 & 1977 model years only. All were military rated as a 1-1/4 ton. (although just a 3/4 ton)
When M880's were built in Warren, MI, they came with data tags made by Chrysler

We have had a dozen or so M880's over the last 20 years, Still 5 or 6 here, have purchased & sold multiple surplus Army depot axle sets, All rears were D60's two have had the D60HD housing. All had 2-1/2 wide shoes, rear hubs 2 styles.

a couple of digits in the vin on your tag seem off D24JF9Sxxxxxx should have BE not JF (J is for a 360 engine)
