I have some hardware cloth and have been putting it behind the air inlets on the sides and at the top of the generator enclosure. In doing some looking under the cabinet, I see a hole under each battery and then what appears to be a large square opening in the middle of the cabinet. Can that large opening be closed off with a piece of sheet metal? My guess is that it is there for a drain if a fuel line cuts loose or something but wanted to check. I was thinking of taking a piece of sheet metal and drilling a few small holes in it and using that instead of hardware cloth on the bottom.

Hardware cloth is just as good to cover that giant hole, thats what I do to every machine. Self tapping sheet metal screws work wonders.
Its a main egress point for water (they are designed to be forded on trailers), but also an air entry point for cooling the set. Thats why I would leave it open. The sides vents may certainly provide enough flow, but it doesn't hurt to keep it in place but also protected.

The hole is there for a reason. Cooling. If it aint broke, don't fix it.

And look before you go screwing... I almost managed to run a screw in to the fuel drain line that was tucked down there somehow. Same could possibly happen with the battery crossover cable if it wasn't routed right...

Speaking of the battery crossover cable be sure it's not chaffing on the engine.

Mine was too, rubbing against the block near one of the unused rear mounting feet. Was arcing against it for who knows how long.... Glad I found it!

FWIW: I wrapped the intermediate battery cable with nylon hydraulic hose protector. I think it is much more abrasion resistant than electrical insulation. I also use it for wire loom in places where the wires might rub, or where I anticipate needing to take the wiring apart for some reason. I haven't had much success with split wire loom due to abrasion and / or heat issues.
Personally, I try to anticipate issues with generators, because if I'm running mine, something has come up, and I probably have other things to be taken care of so I won't have time to be troubleshooting.
