MEP-802a, MEP-803a Aux Fuel / Low Fuel Sensor Solution

Hi all,

I run my 803a off an auxiliary 275 gal tank. When I got the unit, the aux pump would not run. After diagnosing the problem I found I needed one of the Z-shaped low fuel / aux fuel sensors. If you've tried to find this part you know they are made out of unobtainium. If you can find one on eBay, it will probably be a used part. If you are lucky enough to find some NOS, be prepared to pay > $500. for it. Nuts.

I had good luck fixing my fuel level indication issues with some boat parts and help from this forum which I greatly appreciate. So here's my contribution.

For my MEP-803a what I did was purchase the 150mm stainless two float system from ElecTechMart for about $20. The switches work exactly how you would expect. They are NO when floating and NC when the float hits the bottom stop. Black wires are the bottom sensor, red the top. Just like the MIL part.

Ok, the thread on the top is 10 x 1.5 mm. Take the top nut off and the o-ring. Make about a 3 in x 1/2 in long round extender for this float on your metal lathe and screw it permanently to the top of the new float. The old Z-float is held the same way with a collet and gland nut. The picture should help explain.

I just cut the wires to my old float and spliced them in. The colors are the same. It just worked great. I think the MEP-802a has a similar setup, but please let us know if you need a shorter float.

Cheers,
