Hello everyone! I have wanted one of these trucks for years and finally bit the bullet and bought one. What follows is the adventure so far and some of my hopes for the future.
I found my M1008A1 on ebay in Mo, I was able to get it for $3100 and was quite pleased. From what I had seen it was a good deal. The listing said the truck had a newer ~5000 miles) 6.5 in it. The over all mileage was aprox 62k. After I won the auction I contactd the seller, vol. fire dept and was told the truck should be ok for the drive home, approx 510 miles. My gf and I loaded up some tools, a compressor, and a few othr goodies and headed out. When we got there the truck looked even better than the cpl of pics I had (I will post some pics soon, as you read on, you will see why I don’t have it now), it had been being used so it was up on fluids, tires were good etc. The truck fired right up when I got there but he told me once its hot, you have to let it cool down for 10-15min before it will start again, kinda odd for a diesel, but from what I have read it could be as simple as IP timing. I looked it over real good before we left and was very pleasd, it only has a cpl of rust pin holes on the drivers side cab corner I will get to right away, other than that, it was perfect. We got to a motel, and as it was dark I really did not get to look it over to much that night. Got up the next AM to head home and again, it fired right up. About 50 miles down the road I got a low coolant light, then the temp light came on, lucky for me I was about a mile from an exit and they just happened to have a truck service place there. When I got the hood up, I saw that I had sprung a leak in a heater hose, the truck has a circulating hot water pump and it was right there at that, lucky for me there was enough hose to just cut that damaged end off and hook it back up. Next I was putting water back in, after finding it takes more like 45min for it to cool off and start again rather than 10 to 15 min, anyway, as I am pouring the water in, I see it running right back out at the water pump, great, as I said, that shop could not have been at a better location. We left the truck, figuring I would came back that weekend and complete the trip home.
They called be a cpl days later, said it was all done and ready to pick up, so back to Mo I go with my gf again and my car buddy. We got it picked up and planned on just driving through the night and get it home. The drive was pretty much uneventful except the hose on the other side of the hot water pump sprung a leak, again close to the coupling so I fixed it on the side of the road, put some water back in and after sitting for about 45 min to let it cool so it would start we were off.
We stopped to fill up about dark and that when I realized I had no lights, nothing, they had workd the night I picked it up, but now they don’t so w got a hotel and just stayed the night. Ended up being the lights were turned off at the BO light switch and I did not get it back right to get them working. We get up the next morning and take off, I stopped to fuel up and pulling off the interstate it died on my and again, had to wait for it to cool off.
The rest of the trip was uneventful and we finlly made it home.
That next tues I went to go get plates and when I came out to start it up the starter had gone out, great, so I went and got a new one and changed it out there at the DMV. Later that night I went to take it out and nothing but grinding, so for th next week I played with the starter, when I picked it up the guy mumbled something about the starter and bolts but I had just let it go, come to find out they had broken the bolts off in the block and had it jerry rigged with washers, etc.
I was going to take it to my local shop for the hard starting issue anyway so I just had it towed over there. It ends up the PO had broken the starter bolts off inside the block, that’s why I had to use shorter bolts, I am gona have to have them drilled out and retapped.
Once they get that taken care of they can address the smoking and hard start when hot issue. I hope its just timing and not a head gasket.
The new starter wont work with the old tail bracket, they told me I need one off a 6.5. Can anyone tell me a source for this? I am new to the MV world and don’t know a lot of sources yet.
I cant wait to get it back, I have a lot I want to do with it, mainly take off the reflective tape the FD had put on it and get it rustproofed before winter and salt comes. I want to eventually paint it back to OD green, maybe cammo, can anyone tell me a good source for the CARC paint? I have googled it and checked ebay with no luck so far.
I also have an 85 civi half ton that has a 4” lift on it, I am trying to decide of I wana take the lift off of it and put it on my 1008, from what I understand I could use the front 4” springs and just flip the rear shakels and get it where I wana be, it this correct?
The only thing I could find that was missing was the BO lights in the bumper, but I got a new set of those from Papacom here, thanks a lot!!
I will get pics up as soon as I get it back, hopefully next week if I am lucky. I look forward to becoming a member here and learning all I can as well as contributing when I can!
