I had a strange squeaking noise coming from around the accessory drive on my M1008. It was very prevalent at idle and seemed to disappear with the slightest throttle increase. I couldn't tell if it was engine noise drowning it out or if it actually stopped squeaking. It had be going on for about a month when I decided to bust out the mechanic's stethoscope and listen around. I figured it would be a bad bearing in the alternator since it sort of sounded like it. Turns out it was the IP.
I thought awwwww crap here we go. So, like the idiot mechanic I am I kept driving it for another week. In the process of replacing my glow plugs yesterday (there were filed down AC60G's, AC13G's and Wellman's, yikes); I decided to clean the fuel return fitting on the top of the IP. After doing so, my squeaking disappeared. This puzzles me. I was curious if someone could shed light on why this is the case. Also, if you have strange IP squeaking, maybe this is your culprit.
