Probably a dumb exhaust question...Holes drilled in pipe

Guys, I bought an M1009 about a week ago and have been reading through the forums to learn more about it and how to keep it running smoothly. So far everything is checking out pretty good, but while I was under it checking for the starter bracket (it has it, thank God), I noticed that there is a heavy walled section of exhaust pipe before the mufflers that has several holes neatly drilled in it. Is this normal and what are they for?
