Hi guys
It’s been a long time since I have been on the site. Life gets in the way. I just started working on the truck again I am installing a PTO off of an m812 on my m818 ( just a regular passenger side mounted one) I just need to find out the procedure for setting the backlash between the pto gears and the transmission gears. I have paper copies of the TMs where I found all the information on removing / rebuilding/reinstalling the PTO but nothing on backlash specs or procedure for doing it. If anyone can enlighten me on this or point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You're right, the TM only says install gasket and torque the nuts to 30-40 lb-ft.

Big Mike's sells what they call the "correct thickness" gasket which should space the gears correctly. I've heard it said that the gears will whine if too close and be clunky & rough if too far apart.

According to their web page:
CORRECT THICKNESS POWER TAKE OFF GASKET FOR M35A2, M54A2, AND M809 SERIES TRUCKS.

THIS HARD TO FIND GASKET IS SPEC'D BETWEEN .084" AND .104" TO GIVE PROPER CLEARANCE BETWEEN YOUR PTO AND TRANSMISSION GEARS.

I have one to install on my M813 for a winch, someday that is. I got a set of gaskets, 2 in the bag, I was expecting to tighten it in dry and check the slop and then add or remove a gasket. Thanks for the pointer on the thickness.
