Reinforce M1009 bumper or aftermarket hitch?

So I don't have my M1009 yet but I'm actively digging around here for data. I want a trailer for it that I can use for scouts, camping and as a range vehicle for the metal targets. So it won't be airborne but there will definitely be some off camber hauling and creeping over bumpy stuff. I would really like to keep the 09 as stock looking as I can but it seems that towing a M101A1 or M1102 will be pushing the envelope. My only truly safe option for an unmodified hitch looks like the M101A2 with surge brakes. Or at least that's what I'm reading so far.
So my question is: Is there a reinforcement I can do to the stock bumper to strengthen it to the point where I can safely tow a M1102 that is lightly loaded or should I just go with an aftermarket hitch that pokes out under the bumper? I think the latter is the preferred choice but I wanted to get some feedback. Either way, I also think a small lift is in my future to keep things level.

I'm looking at the M1102's because they appear to be going cheaper than 101A2s at locations near me. I don't really need that extra space.

Yeah, I figured. If I win one of the current crop of 1102's near me I'm going to have to baby it home on back roads because I probably won't have a real hitch early enough. OR I could just put a pintle receiver on and tow it behind the minivan. That would be a sight to see! And an accident waiting to happen of course... (no, I would never really do that)
