Hello All,

After ordering some parts, chasing some leads, installing some parts I "refurbished", and then finding all the missing parts under the passenger's seat... aua I have some info for everyone.

First of all, the boots are available. The OE manufacturer, Basic Rubber and Plastics in Michigan, has a few more NOS (in great shape), and can make new ones as well.

P/N: 10876436
NOS: $150 plus shipping
New: $250 (if ordered individually, unsure on price for bulk order.)

Second (good news and bad news), the "unobtainium" CV joints are available NEW as well... but are still extremely expensive.

I was informed of three prices for the last USED CV's sold by a few surplus places: one said $2800 each, one said $1000 each, and one said "If you have one, you can ask as much as you want."

"CON-VEL" (seen on the old parts) was bought out by Rowland Company. I contacted one of Rowland's reps and inquired about the CV's for the wrecker, the OE part is unavailable but a dimensionally identical one is available with an external spline which should not impact functionality.

P/N: E3-98-551-2X
1-2 pcs $1,460.00/ea
50+ pcs $ 1,272.00/ea
100+ pcs $ 1,185.00/ea

I asked the Rowland rep for these price breaks, hoping that we could get the price down closer to $500 each if we did a group buy... no luck, but they're a little cheaper at least.

For those of us with (X)M816's, M543's and M62's ( I think?), these are probably a good item to have on-hand. The question becomes: Is it more cost-effective to buy new joints, or to custom-fabricate a solution without them? I don't have an answer to that, myself.

Finally, and this is just information, the two pieces of the driveshaft itself (long and short) are NOT all the same.

I ordered a short shaft and found that the four holes to connect to the long shaft didn't line up. Apparently some shafts are drilled at a perfect 90 degree "+" pattern, and some (like mine) are drilled with a long and short side (more of an "X" shape). If anyone needs a short shaft with the perfect square "+" shaped bolt pattern, I have two now that I can't use.

I'm interested to hear everyone's thoughts on the CV joints, I believe this impacts all of us with 5 ton wreckers, other than the guys with M936's.

Thanks,
Peter
