Replacement speedometer fitment issues

Hello everyone. I have an M1123 with a mechanical speedometer setup. The issue is that the speed that I sourced from a 998 seems like the male square nipple end on the cable is too long and the nut wont quite thread onto the back of the speedo. I have looked at other speedos and they all seem pretty similar. I was contemplating trimming some of the nipple off of the cable but I know that isn’t the right answer.

You might have to twist and push it back. It may have come out of the transfer case drive. There is a kind of nylon socket on the speedo end that can get "dislocated" and stick out too far.
It is definitely bottoming out on that nylon. I’ll take some pictures to better explain.
