I have had luck with heat and cold. I use one of those compressed air cans(like for dusting a computer processor heatsink) held upside down to freeze the caps.

Did you smack the clips with the hammer and socket? This does two things, it pushes the cap back from the clip releasing tension against it and loosens the clip in the groove.
