speedometer cable removal from transfer case

I am helping a friend pull out his sprag transfer case and we cant get the speedometer cable to unscrew. any tricks?

The speedometer cable attaches to the adpater. I used an adjustable wrench to remove mine.

Yours looks a little rough. I have new ones for $25 if you decide to replace it.
