So today I decided to replace my turn signal cam on my steering column. BIG MISTAKE! LOL!
I started the late morning at NAPA getting a bunch of parts for the next few repairs I have to do on the 1009. I headed home and started to dive into the steering column first. I was taking pictures for a step by step when I went one step too far. I was planning to take off the plastic housing that holds the cam assembly, ignition cylinder, and turn signal flasher. Everything up until THAT point was going beautifully! I unbolted everything and slid it out. I then realized that I couldn't access the turn signal lever assembly from there (was trying to see if I could tighten it up somehow and remove the slop out of it) so I went to put it back together. Well I had dropped the ignition because I wanted to change it as well with a better working one. As I was fumbling to put it back together, I got the ignition gears out of time. It took me the better part of two hours to mess around with it to get it back in time. Long story short, I FINALLY got it timed and got the collar bolted back up and went to replace the cam. Well guys, with all this China crap, it wasn't a good fit. It fit in there, but it wouldn't hold for the left turns partly because the replacement part sucked but also because of all the slop in the piece that the turn signal lever goes into. Anyway- I ended up just calling it parts and pulled the column out Knocky. I replaced his ignition cylinder and steering wheel (had glue and crap all over it). And it now sits in PITA.
I HATE HATE HATE HATE HAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTEEEEEEEE cannibalizing good vehicles to fix another one. So, I now owe Knocky another steering column, horn, and two new batteries. I just fear if I keep taking the easy way out, Knocky will be sitting on cinder blocks before the end of the year, LOL!
I am thinking about returning the turn cam because it's not damaged and just going about my way. I guess the good thing is I learned how to set the reverse lights to kick on. I also learned how to use my brand new wheel puller and locking ring puller (LOL!). I guess with every epic fail there is SOME good.
Anyway, it's just been one of those days.
