This is probably a no brainer but drilling a hole in each corner of the tail gate where the foot brackets are bolted will let the rain water drain out when you leave the tail gate down when it rains. Mine didn't have any drain holes and when I would raise the gate the water would splash everywhere. The under side of that channel is a rust trap anyway.
