When I installed my desplined flanges I noticed no real difference in driving, except that it didn't want to slow down as much because of the reduced drag <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_approve.gif" alt="Approve">

but, when I removed the rear rear axle shaft as well, that made a HUGE difference. Then I could feel an increase in acceleration, decreased turning radius, smoother ride, less noise, higher top speed.

Before I'd turn 2200 RPM at 50 on a flat road. Now I can cruise at about 53 at that RPM, with no wheel hop. Before, over 50 she would start bouncing.

Not so great in the snow, but great if you are driving around town. Also, rear shaft removal is only about 20 minutes with hand tools (not even air!)

Yes, it does make a difference. I think that contributed to my poor fuel consumtion on my recent adventure north. BTW, I do know a guy that sells a lockout hub kit for a rear axle. Basically it has a single axle that's double splined and a lockout hub. Not as efficient as an interaxle disconnect but tons easier that pulling a shaft.

You could probably pick up double splined axles from Ouverson Engineering:

http://www.ouversonengineering.com/

These allow you to use front drive plates on the rear axle with some beefy axles, so this would work with lockouts.
