I've been using this as a guide to torques:

300 ft-lbs seems a lot for Grade 8 9/16 bolt?

I'm getting a different spec from these sources:

169 ft-lbs...

Putting almost twice the torque on it seems to be risky. Ideas?

So, the bearing cap preload tool that allows me to get an actual torque instead of banging it over with a chisel and giving it a WAG.

I took a pry bar that fits between the flats as well as a scrap socket and viola! have a way to measure torque for that big adjuster:

You need to use the Factory torque specifications. If it says 300 ft Ibs then use 300 ft Ibs.
That is a really good trick to get the proper "Pre-Load" ! Good job !

Got an answer from Ouverson. He's torquing them to 110-130 and if he replaces them with ARP studs, 160. I went 130-140.
That 300 would twist the heads right off I'm pretty sure.

The torque spec could have been a misprint, but considering the Chevy CUCV 5/8" front "U" bolts are torqued to 150 ft Ibs. maybe not.
