Most of the HMMWV we see in TV and movies are Civilian ones that they paint to look military. But then again you only see them from afar so they look good from a distance. If I was going to go to the expense of getting a HMMWV I would probably buy an H1 and spend the extra expense to convert it into a military one. This way I would have leagle title to the truck and I wouldn't have to justify to anyone. But as much and I think they are cool, they are just too expensive for my wallet so unless one of you all take pitty on me and give me one of yours... I don't expect to own one. :D

On the subject of local and state govs owning them and selling them. I think that most of the time when the local gov sells the truck it is because they haven't read the paperwork that came with it and just assume that it's theirs to sell. After all we are talking about government employees (which I am one so I can say that) and I truly believe that people just don't take the time to read all the documentation and or get a leagle reading of it. On the other hand try getting two lawyers to read the same peice of paper and come up with the same conculsion so there may be some of that going on where the local law director says it's ours to sell screw the feds. Either way the poor sap on the recieving end of said equipment ends up getting screwed. Either in the vehicle being taken from him or having to spend butt loads of money in the courts to keep it.

Just my 2cents on the matter.

No, it does not. The 25 year vintage exemption has come into play. It is totally up to the state. Title requirements vary but have nothing to do with Federal.
This is totally not true. The federal demil requirement trumps the 25 year state exemption. If you don't believe it call 1-877-DLA-CALL and give them the specifics on this HUMMWV and see what happens with it. By the way I didn't pull this out of my butt, I just got off the phone with them and asked about the HMMWV requirements and who has the final authority on their disposition.

That is correct. There is "no statute of limitations" on DEMIL items. If an item is a DEMIL item, it will always be that DEMIL coded item, unless the DEMIL code changes.

I completely agree with hndrsonj and emmando22 but.............. Heres my question, If the said item is indeed a demil item they why does the GOV. not go back on the previously auctioned off HMMWV's and require the current owners to demil them?

My take on it is that there was not a do not sell clause in the USMC contract. that was soon corrected after the sale.

I either heard, read somewhere or maybe dreamed it...but has anyone else heard the "tale" of the infamous 600 or so hummers the USMC "traded" to some repair facility in exchange for work on other stuff?

To continue...evidently the hummers got auctioned off by that facility after they lost a contract with someone...somewhere for the hummers.

Of course the other rumor I heard/read/dreamed was that GM got PO'ed when those hummers went into civilian hands and sorta "strong armed" the Gov into denying access to civilian users and requiring demil when no longer needed by the using agency.

In other words...I hear/read/dream alot...and have no clue what the truth is.

BUT....if I wanted a hummer...which I do not...I would make sure the paper trail was squeakly clean...maybe even including calling the folks hndersonj referenced.

"the only legal real humvees ones that the public can own are the one that got auctioned of by the usmc during the 90s before the DOD classified the humvees to be demiled item"

TRUE - but also, if you rebuild them from parts/canibalized trucks (done 3 of them so far)
how were you able to get a perfect humvee frame or how did you weld it back perfectly. ive seen how the DLA contractor demiled or cut this things like a crisscross same as the other DOD demiled items, weapons.? and the question goes back to how were you able to tittle them if you were able to assemble it back to one.?

Why not just find a Hummer H1 and rattle can it into 383 green? It was built on the same line as the real one for the military.
because the civilian hummer H1 doesnt have the MILSPEC standard that they built for the military. -deep water fording, water proof electrical wiring, CARC paint, HD brake system transfer case and of course bulletproof if you live in a bad area.:D it will cost you more to convert

I think we should petition the Commander and Chief that we want some HMMWV's . We pay taxes to supply them and we would like to preserve some, soo since they are considered tactical, why not register them like class III tansferable firearms, pay a $200 tax stamp and you get to drive your HMMWV. I really don't like the idea of clueless HMMWV operators on the streets but knowledgeable operator-owners don't scare me, sort of like commercial semi operators.

I'd go for that since I have two class 3 stamps, apply wait 5 months and then get your certificate.

PB, you are right and not crazy (at least this time). Everything you said is relatively close. There was even an article in MVM about the auctions (around issue 75 or so). Most were in ATL some were west coast. After the auction-demil was required!aua

It's because the complete frames were released pre-the USMC auction. If you can find one you can put it together. They are getting more expensive though. I found some in TN and sent the info to someone west coast (think it was AVN-TECH, and he bought all the HMMWV stuff including frames) so the legal stuff is still out there but getting harder and more $$$$ to find.

I had the cash, I found the HMMWV and I was in contact with the Dept Of Defense and was told that they have the right to 'reclaim' these at anytime. all this happened in the last 48 hours. I would be willing to bet that there is a member here that is also a agent for the gov't. Big brother is watching.

It was Ottocraft in Tracy City, TN. Below is the initial link. Sam Weiners is just down the road and he used to own it. He still has tons of mostly older stuff. If you want a legal HMMWV, some dealers have several (like CSI) or shop ebay. If I was going to buy one i'd check with DLA on it's legality-if the papertrail was questionable.2cents

I was also informed that it can be done legally by putting one together from parts by the DOD agent........Go figure

The problem is, that you will spend way more doing that than just buying a legal complete one in the first place.
