CARC Questions

I have a few questions about CARC paint.

Can civilians buy Sherwin Williams Carc Type 2?

How will CARC hold up in harsh winters with road salt compared to other paints? Assuming proper prep

Regular people can buy CARC from Sherwin Williams. However, it is only available from an Industrial Coating Division location.
As far as durability goes there probably isn’t a finish that will hold up as well CARC.
It is a very good finish. Just remember that the stuff has a lot of issues when it comes to working with it.
The use of a fresh air source when painting is mandatory. In other words, suit up with a Tyvek suit, put on a full-face air mask and gloves, then one can start painting. And if you don’t have some heat lamps to help with drying it takes about seven days for the paint to cure. After it cures it will last a long time.

California says no to CARC paint?!?!
Shocker....!

CARC holds up extremely well.

Ive hauled about 8 loads of gravel in my M925A2.
Average about 7 tons each load.
Scrape it out by hand most of the time.

All that gravel hasn't even worn down CARC paint at all.
After I wash truck, paint is just like new.
Simply amazing stuff.

Just be prepared for sticker shock.
Its very expensive

You statement on it being very expensive has me curious. The last time I priced it out, and that was some time ago, it ranged from $79 a gallon to $83. I guess I’ll have to call Richmond in the morning to see what the current price is.

It's expensive compared to the Gillespie. In the standard automotive world, it's a very good price.

If youre just talking touch up carc subsitute from a rattle can matches up perfect if the original paint isnt too faded, used some in my interior. Also good to note that the carc subsitute looks radically different wet vs dry. The green looks like john deere green when wet, but then turns to perfect od green dry.

But if youre doing a full repaint, use the real deal if you can get it. I know I gotta do a full repaint, my truck probably hasnt been repainted since the 90s judging by the fade. But with everything else I wanna do its down in the "sometime before I die" section of my to do list.

I have read from some members posts here, that it's well over $100 a gallon for the genuine CARC from Sherman Williams.
Thats the reason for my comment.

Imagine that. I was given 25 gallons of it a few years back. It was out dated. I painted several CUCV's and yes it holds up well even to the drivers side floor of my Mule M1009. Wears like iron. I have water base CARC paint that I bought. That works well also and cleans up with a garden hose. I have painted a few CUCV's with that. My favorite all time easy paint is Alkyd enamel. It is thinned with mineral spirits and easy to spray. CARC does look best. It is so green and flat it vibrates. Good Luck. Never use MEK as thinner above 70 degrees. MAK is the best thinner for CARC in warm climates. You will thank yourself for using the correct thinner. I also do not recommend acetone. It gets very dry edges also. I paint the 3 color wet on wet to void the dry edges. It dry's in about 1 day and can be unmask. I reassemble after the second day. Carefully. I take the entire vehicle apart. All glass removed. The pinch welds are always in need of some attention. Also remove the bed. it will look much better with no overspray between the cab and bed. Once again Good Luck. I am not a pro at this but painted many CUCV's over the past 20 years. 99% of the paint job is prep work. That is where you separate quality from a rush job. I have done rush jobs. On Demo derby cars and a few off road vehicles. Terminus M1009 is in for a rush job before my next outing in July.
