i recently purchased m998 with a good running 6.2L i have spent hours researching this truck and have seen a lot of negative comments on the 6.2 ?? i got this truck to drive around the farm and if the time comes i guess ill be able to drive over zombies easier !? i don't plan on driving fast ( i still don't understand why someone would want to drive these things 80+ mph )... but i have no experience or knowledge about the 6.2 and would love to be schooled on it ..i have noticed some oldtimers drive the **** out of there 6.2 and love them ? my other question is what can be done to assure longer life and reliability on the 6.2 ? thanks in advance! i just joined the site and am loving all the info i am getting !!

Dhawks, Let me say welcome. I have owned 6.2's and 6.5's since the early 90's. I have a 82 6.2 in a K2500 that has givin me good service for over 20 years. If you treat them well, never over heat them and keep the oil changed it will last. Yes they have been known to cause trouble. But a well taken care of 6.2 will give service well over 200K. Just make sure the harmonic balancer is in good shape.

Not sure about the hate, other than the fact that other diesel engines in similar size have a lot more power, thus the disappointment when people drive this one.
As for 80 miles per hour plus, I live in the state with 75 miles speed limit where cars routinely do 90+ on interstate.
Driving to a camping spot 3 hours away get annoying when you can only do 60 or 65 miles an hour and semi trucks keep passing you.

The 6.2 is no power engine, but it is enough.

I love the 6.2.........

I don't think there's anything wrong with the 6.2 aside from lack of power. They have some known issues but aren't especially problematic.

I've got a friend and fellow SS member with a M1028 with a 6.2. He's since swapped in a 4L80E and more recently a Banks turbo kit. Said it drives like a modern pickup!

My truck has a 6.2 as well and it will get my truck down the road just fine until a 6.5T swap can happen.

(All said In My Humble Opinion). I like the 6.2. The design of the HMMWV is what it is. It was designed not to outrace the rest military. It is a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle not a Fast Attack Vehicle. The 6.2 fit very well with the overall design of the HMMWV. The HMMWV was designed with cold war parameters. In our more modern times it seems strange to many why they designed the HMMWV the way they did. They picked a vehicle that could go almost everywhere military cheap (you could do things similar cheaper) that had great success using US parts. I think it is a great vehicle. I think the 6.2 is a great engine. The 6.5 is a 6.2 with some upgrades. Also most 6.5's are detuned so they are very similar.

Is an Apple phone so superior to a Samsung. Yet people will say to me Apple phones are the only phone everything else they say sucks. But, more people actually use Samsung world wide, so it works.

If you take good care of any engine and have the know how you can get many 100's of thousands of miles out of them. Not un-conceivable you could do well over a million. Maintain, maintain.

There is nothing wrong with a 6.2.

The biggest issue with a HMMWV is the transmission. The 3L80 is by design limiting, (speed, gas mileage, and to some degree power). But that is by design. They wanted an automatic transmission without sophisticated electrics that would work after Nuke day, they did not want service men (who are normally young stupid men) driving too fast, they wanted it to go through and over almost anything.

The 6.2 and the 3L80 was chosen by design. And I still love it.

Good luck to you.

Ive had two M998's and two 6.2L's and I personal love them. I don't need to blast down the Hwy at 75-80!
i really enjoy the simplicity of the engine and easy access to the parts. I will tell you that in a perfect world and I may get crapped on for this but I'd run a P pump 12v cummins if the stars aligned in the future... ;)

The 6.2 is no tire boiler, but as stated it wasn't meant to be. Dependable and simple-- Once you go through your regular maintenance, it should give you many miles of service.

The older I get, the slower I want to go. So, I guess I'm turning into Humvee--- slow and dependable!!!

I almost had this conversation with someone yesterday about 3 speed vs. 4 speed. The fates spared me.

I'm with you. Slow an easy wins the race. I plan on using mine for parades, weekend rides, hooking up a plow for my farm (seriously), just now getting where I'm comfortable riding farther than a couple miles at a time having done a LOT of work under the body and inside as well, I hope to have it for many years to come.

My sister and brother-in-law own a first gen. H1 slantback and they've gotten over 200k miles on it. My BIL is a senior airframe and powerplant mechanic who does his own maintenance. They both say it's gotten them around after many hurricanes when no one else could and wouldn't trade it for anything although they're considering an M35 now.

I'm still young enough I appeciate technology but old enough I really resent it too.

I am jealous of your friend, would love to talk to him about the banks turbo kit. Been looking around for a turbo that could potentially work.

Did my conversion for $2500 including labor. I did mine all military though, using civi parts would bring that number down.

worth the money ?
For me yes extremely worth it. Now that I've been running around with it, I cannot imagine life with my old 3 speed. Its quiet on surface streets and I can now cruise at 65 no problem, engine is quiet and the ground is loud. There is a pretty good mpg bump, and since I use mine as a commuter that helps.
