Running like a champ...then missing smoking and no power

I have a 1966 multifuel Deuce and half that I purchased about 5 or so years ago. I took it out one day and all of the sudden it started running very rough, smoked considerably and lost all power. I checked and then changed all three fuel filters but it never improved. It almost sounds like a miss or timing? But I am just not as familiar with the multifuel engine to determine what is up.
ANY help would be greatly appreciated .

what color is the smoke? White, blue, black and how heavy is it? Is the smoke steady or does it puff with the miss? How do your fluids look, are you losing oil or coolant?

Black or dark gray, it is fairly light and is both constant but does puff a bit more with the miss. I put my hand in front of the exhaust to feel if there was any moisture in the exhaust and couldn't feel any. Oil was slightly above the full mark on the dipstick and the coolant was found to be low but had just been topped off about 4 days before the incident happened. There is no indication of oil in coolant or coolant in the oil It had been running as smooth as always, no misses, or smoke (for a deuce), I was heading up a hill to take it in to fuel it up when it started doing it. It would run fine then spit and cough then run fine again. (I thought it might be an issue with old fuel even though the fuel was less than 2 years old and had been treated) or possibly water contaminated fuel, the fuel filters really showed no indication of water intrusion but being in the rain forest of Tennessee one never knows. I put new fuel in it, came back and replaced all three filters, cleaned the filter canisters well, added a little bit of seafoam to each when I refilled the filter canisters. And with a few cranks the old man fired up but the miss remained.

Well you can start or not with the trouble shooting manual or you can skip around. You can pull / test injectors. You can do compression check. You can check fuel delivery or you can start with the trouble shooting manual and we can keep on guessing.

Well, I did start with the troubleshooting chart in the literature I had available to me at the time and it indicated probable fuel filter issues then I believe it basically defaulted to depot level maintenance.
I guess, I must have misunderstood how this site works, as I am looking for assistance from those with more experience with the multi-fuel engines in a vehicle that is as old as I am in lieu of just "skipping around" or "keeping on guessing"

In my experience with other types of equipment (not multi-fuel engines on 54 year old vehicles) normally when something is operating properly and smoothly and all of the sudden goes wonky with no apparent strange circumstance or known abuse or misuse it is something simple, I apologize if my ignorance of proper in depth trouble shooting procedures or lack of all of the required tools to test every system on this particular vehicle offends anyone. I am trying to refrain from purchasing any additional items (that I may only use once in the next 20 years) or waste valuable time looking in the wrong area when someone else has already had this issue arise and fixed it.

I had a similar issue but it was intermittent and resolved with a filter change....after I had changed the filters not too long before and thought "nah, that ain't the problem!". It sure was.
I got a bad batch of fuel somewhere.

I second the advice to take the troubleshooting TM and go through the fuel and air systems step by step. Do one thing at a time, so it is clear what helped and what did not.

Ha, maybe it ingested a rat and its nest!

Yea sometimes it is the simple things we over look myself included. To LIoydb I am not trying to give you a hard time but wanting you to see it is very hard to diagnose any problem over the internet. Sometimes the Deuce is the hardest with it simple but problematic IP system. Myself I do not like to pull off injector lines till the last resort in finding the problem. If it was a more modern gas engine yep just pull the spark plugs and do a compression test. Funny but a rats nest could be the problem buy blocking the air flow. So intake system checked for air flow and turbocharger good shape and working as it should. Check the simple or easer things then when it comes time injector pop tested and compression check. Yes it could be just one injector and if you started a cold motor yes you might be able to feel the exhaust manifold for that cylinder before the whole manifold heated up and find the injector that is miss firing. You can also listen to each injector when engine is running with a long screw driver and if you have heard one the is working right you will know the one that is not popping correctly. Then you have to figure out is it the injector or a problem with that injector port in the IP Head. Sometimes as said problems can be simple sometimes drive you crazy running them down.

It reads like the truck has sat for a while. You have already done all 3 filters in the fuel system. Once you verify the intake pump is working. Pulling the pump out of the tank and looking at the intake screens would be a good idea. I had a similar issue a few years ago and my intank pump screens were gummed over.

Why not start with easy stuff, he said black smoke, yup, could be an injector, but, if it were mine, black smoke, no power, i'd be looking at intake issues. If it has a paper filter or a critter got in the clean side, coulda sucked the nest or paper into the turbo. Easy to pull a filter housing and intake pipe. Stick your finger in the compressor hsg to see if the turbo shaft spins freely....do this wit the engine NOT running

Black/ Grey emissions,
(Then..) Just a thought..Some (Not all) of the deuces with the lds engines will run without the in tank working.
However, Some run extremely rough without it.
Some will not run.
Check the fuel supply.
(In Tank Pump Clogged, or missing bottom spacers).

That could be an issue too, easy to tell if it aint working. Again, SIMPLE things first BEFORE you start tearing into the engine.
