Part help and grease, M116a3 Trailer

Hi all,

I've got this fairly clean cargo trailer, 2wm116a3 to be specific.

However I've developed a leak in the surge brakes and it's one of the slave cylinders... I probably dont need brakes on the thing for my purposes but I prefer to fix it if it's not too hard to get a new cylinder. Can anybody help me find a civilian part number for that. Left side slave cylinder if it matters.

Also, I was planning on repacking the wheel bearings as a precaution, but a buddy of mine said I would need to replace the grease seal. It looked more like a reusable part in the TM and I'm tempted to just pull the wheel end off and re pack it, but I dont want to get into a sticky situation and break what wasn't broke to begin with. Any advice on the matter would be wonderful.

Read this thread, you'll find some part numbers that you can pick up locally for seals and a brake wheel cylinder kit.

I did a search for the cylinder part numbers from the TM, but couldn't find the cylinders available anywhere under the Bendix part number.

Thanks Coug, I hate to repair cylinders, but if that's the best option...

If you have a trailer, have you repacked the bearings? Tbh, the last axle bearings I packed were on a Ural and a Ford Falcon, and i didn't need to replace seals, so I'm a little sceptical.

I have several trailer, so far haven't repacked any of the military ones, just my Dexter EZ Lube (which is a nice and easy job, just have to pop the covering off and pump grease through)

The only issue I see with repacking them is if you damage the seal when repacking the inner bearing. For the cost of the seal if I were to repack a bearing I think I'd do it the right way and just replace it.
Repacking the outer shouldn't be any type of problem.

If you pull off the wheel and there isn't any water contamination or signs of abnormal wear, I'd probably just shove as much new grease in as I can without removing the seal and bearing, then reinstall and call it good. Getting it torqued down properly will have more effect than anything else.


Sad part is, I have 4 of the A2 axles just sitting out under a tree right now with the heavy springs on them, was too good of a deal to pass up even if I only have 1 M116A2 trailer they could fit on (which doesn't have the heavy springs on it)

I work with heavy equipment and I just dont understand why everything isnt set up with those ez lube setups. Massive time saver and not exactly complex...

I agree, nearly impossible to screw up, even for an E1, and so much time and effort saved.

I believe the wheel cylinders are available at croft. I did not think they were special but ordinary civy item. Can't say 100% as non of my trailers have leaked from cyls.

I've done a pretty extensive search on the part number and two of the civilian part numbers, seems like you can get it if you're the government, it still shows up on sites geared toward gov supply, but I need one, not a pallet lol
