Maryland Inspections and Registration Problem

I think the Deligates want to help, but I don't want a new law, just the current one modified to allow for registration of vehicles that are Federally exempt from FMVSS.

We could sue the State of Maryland to have the law changed. I am unsure of who could or would represent us however. Just getting someone to evaluate the merits of our case would be the place to start.

thanks,
jeff

I have just read through this thread as well as this earlier thread.

I live in Maryland and own an M1097R1. I actually went to the MVA recently with my SF-97 (it does not have any mention of "off-road use only") in hopes of titling it. After an hour of waiting for someone to approve the title, the MVA employee informed me that my vehicle was a "tactical" vehicle and that the MVA does not title or register "tactical" vehicles. The employee was merely a messenger as she was gone for some time before coming back to her desk and informing me of this. To the best of my abilities, I cannot find any state law prohibiting "tactical" vehicles from being titled or registered.

I see that the ASED-009 has not been rescinded nor updated since 2021. I also see that there have been a few bills put forward in recent legislative sessions that have not gone far. Are there any current updates to getting FMV's titled and registered in Maryland?

If other owners are still struggling with this issue, I would be willing to help work on potentially getting the law changed with them .

I haven't heard of any recent efforts to change the laws in MD or VA myself. There are some quiet hopes that the new MVPA leadership will take this one, but in fairness they have a lot of repairs to make before they can find time for this topic.

Maryland doesn't actually care about the law, or anything other than whatever policy they can make up on the spot.

They don't want those evil scary assault trucks on the road, despite them being exempt from FMVSS.

'We don't register tactical vehicles'

To add:

They always pull up #%(& like 'It's for safety reasons!'.. Which is why I can register a Ford Model T for the road, or a '56 Plymouth Belvedere with no seatbelts..

It never holds up any under scrutiny but they don't care - they just want an excuse to do what they want, and will give you a 'don't like it? Sue us' attitude.

Start a trust - you know, for estate planning purposes. Title/register the vehicle in that trust's name in the state of your choosing, to make it easier to manage.

Problem solved.
