Hi all! I've been in the market for an M1078, or one of its variations, for a little over a month now. It seems like every question I have about them ends up sending me here or a member's Youtube video for the answer.

Trawling through the second hand market, I've noticed there's a pretty big difference in owner satisfaction and truck reliability if it had ever been through MMV (or I'm sure from other similar sellers, but I haven't run across any second hand). If anyone knows what they do for inspections/tune ups that makes them so much more reliable, or there's a guide here I haven't found yet, I'd love to know. It would be really nice to start off with a machine that runs well straight from GP or Craigslist rather than going through the 2+ years people otherwise seem to do before they have everything fixed up and in good working order.

Welcome to the Outfit!

There may be some for sale in the For Sale Forum (none available at the moment)

Yeah, running and reliable would be great.

Yeah, there's one on the opposite side of the country (CT), but I'm keeping a look out. Basically just checking GP, Craigslist, here, and Ebay every day or two.

I know I'll almost certainly have to put some work in replacing seals, hoses, fluids, etc. But I've also seen a lot of people who do that sort of thing immediately on Youtube and they still have issues, so I assume there must be more to it. There was one video where a guy bought one and was told by a commenter to check a certain bolt because they love to back out (I think it connected the motor and transmission) and his was indeed loose.

There has to be a list somewhere of all of those common issues that just have to be checked to make sure things don't break after a dozen hours, it just might be proprietary information in some of these shops. Obviously the maintenance manuals aren't sufficient or there wouldn't be all of the issues in the first place. They'd be much less common at the very least.

Every Operators TM has a section titled PMCS. Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services. Its not a bad document. But it can not cover each and every situation. Well, it could, but then it would have 10,000 pages. The PMCS is your way of making those checks. Sadly, its often ignored.

Sorry if it sounded like I was putting down the technical manuals. A lot of the Youtube videos I've watched were from members of these forums who were following the technical manuals closely, and it would still take them a couple of years to get on top of all of the issues and items that needed to be rebuilt/replaced. Maybe all MMV does is run through all of the TM maintenance routines at once and rebuild everything, basically stripping it to the frame and building it back up, but it seems like there might be something more to it given how long term the effects seem to be.

Good luck on your search.

In addition to the PMCS, take a look at this thread: Top 5 Fixes to your LMTV

There are so many old, gold threads in this forum. It's absolutely crazy! But yeah, these are exactly the sorts of things I was talking about, addressing the common failure points that aren't really covered in the maintenance manuals. Thank you for pointing this one out.
