New HMMWV M1097R1 Guy Has Questions

Hello,
We are proud to have just gotten our first HMMWV, which we got from GovPlanet. So many questions that we hope some of you can help us with.

There appears to be additional stuff that appears to be intercom or radio related.

hmmwv-tray-with-speaker.jpg

hmmwv-rear-tray-and-speaker.jpg

hmmwv-bed-cables.jpg

Is any of this stuff useful for HAM/Amatuer radio?

Thank you

The front trays are for radios and the top has a radio mount. Bottom right is a speaker.

Middle front is another speaker of a different kind.

Mount on rear tunnel looks like another radio mount.

Wires on rear fender, one is for an antenna.

All this stuff has little use in civy world. Some have rigged the speakers for other uses but they are not high fidelity by any means.

I would be interested in the u channel protecting the rear fender wires if you remove.

One of the cables to the top front trays radio mount, I think is the power cable and probably still Hot and connected to power shunt.

I would remove.
Usually all this stuff is removed at demill before being sold.

@juanprado - Thank you for your replies. We are not planning to remove anything at this time, but honestly do not know since we only had the truck 2 days - so much to learn and decisions yet to make on how we want to setup and use this truck.

It starts up and runs but the steering is like wrestling a bear. It says power steering going out in felt pen on the windshield so I think that is priority one right now. I am preparing some photos with questions on HMMWV power steering now and will post soon.

Looking at other HMMWVs on GovPlanet I see this big round thing:

other-hmmwv.jpg

This is our engine from above and we do not seem to have this part. Is it missing, or is our engine just different?

Wow GP getting sloppy, usually every bit of radio stuff gets stripped out.
Power steering on these is a pain, you must follow the TM procedure to get the air out after repairs.

Yes, but weird things happen with them. A few millennia ago, a hmmwv with an antenna tuner still mounted on the rear right fender got sold to a member here. Not sure if it works but he sold it it to me with all the cables and mounts knowing I wanted it for a "display" and not to flip. I could never had afforded the thing otherwise.

Big round thing is power steering remote reservoir. You have V belts so you will have the old design GM pump with integral reservoir.

We are all happy to help.

FYI, Technical manuals (TM’s) are free and downloadable at the top stickies and also in the TM forum of the website.

That might help with some of your questions.

@NDT - Thank you for the reply. In another forum post I read that the owner need a 1900 PSI power steering pump. Would my HMMWV need the same?

@TOBASH - Thank you. I have a M1097R1 and did not see my model listed. Is my HMMWV compatible with one or more of the other manuals, and if so which one(s)?

M1097 means your vehicle was rebuilt. Does not mean M1097 is a specific model. M1097 is a catch all poorly descriptive “bastardized” term that includes several iterations IIRC.

From the v-belts and three speed shifter you can start by looking up M998.

Your dual voltage alternator might be N3135.

Your transmission is a mechanical three speed automatic TH400 that will LACK a parking lockout.

Your engine appears to be normally aspirated (n/a). Most likely a 6.5, less likely a 6.2.

Your best source of information is RWH Retired War Horses. Former military mechanic and current civilian mechanic who works on many of these.

I found their website. They are in California and I am in Oregon so I won't be visiting them for this. Maybe they have parts I need so if they ship I will see.

Seems this is a GM part power steering pump with different valving. Somewhere I read that the valving is done with bolts on the back of the pump and can change the PSI that way.

Yes, it is a tradional Saginaw gm pump but pressure boosted up.
I would recommend the oe pump from a reputable military parts dealer. Many have tried using a gm pump and very unhappy.
Nothing oe gm has the hydraulic fan clutch, hydroboost, and possible hydraulic winch so you will not find the correct psi in oe gm.

M1097 is the heavy variant.

The R1 series designates this was part of a recapitalization program that upfitted lighter truck to the heavy variant.

If your truck has a 3 speed transmission use M1097A1 in the manuals.
If your truck has a 4 speed transmission use M1097A2 in the manuals.

Apparently if the truck is listed as 10k gross weight it may have the earlier (A1) halfshafts even if it is a 4 speed truck.
If it is 10.3k gross weight and 4 speed is should be almost entirely A2 comparable.

You misunderstood.
