M1165 Won’t Accelerate, Feels Like It’s Slipping

Took my M1165 for its first drive today, didn’t go well. I couldn’t get it past about 10 mph, if I gave it more gas it would feel like it was slipping, didn’t feel like it actually accelerated. Transmission didn’t try to shift or anything. Any ideas what could be going on and what I should check?

Did you try high lock on the transfer case? Sometimes these have CV axle problems that resemble slipping.
I did not, was on the street so I didn’t want to leave it locked, I don’t know how fragile these things are. Safe to test for a short distance?

I would search for and download a copy of the 4L80E Transmission Troubleshooting Guide dated Jan 2008, the short the Terminal A and E under the left rear seat Data Link Connector to see if you have any transmission error codes. Then work through the troubleshooting guide from there.

Good luck. This can be a PITA, but usually is something like a misaligned switch, out of tolerance sensor or similar.

Thanks. I'm going to check power first because someone told me that the TCU light should come on when the truck is in run but not on and turn off once running, I don't think the light was coming on at any point but I didn't really check before starting. If that is working I'll try a short trip in HL and also try shifting manually between gears (I never tried that either, I was just focusing on making it back home), if still no luck then I'll see what I can for codes.

When you say "slipping", does that mean that the engine is revving up, or is it more like it is bogging down?

How does the fluid look? Is it dark with burned odor?

It is possible for the filter to not be in proper position or be so dirty the transmission is starved for fluid... here is a thread on that: (28) New Humvee Owner - Transmission question | SteelSoldiers
Engine revs up, makes RPM quickly.

Fluid looks good, I'm going to drop the pan this weekend and see what's going on.

Thanks, I'll start reading through that thread.

If and when you are stuck in 1st or in "Low Lock" and it doesn't want to shift if could "feel" like slipping, but in fact you are only in limp mode and won't go any faster than 10mph. Make sure your High Lock, Low Lock range connecting linkage for the transfer case are aligned correctly and damage free, try to shift through that range and come back to "High" only, not High Lock. Make sure your brake lights are off when not on the brake pedal (only mentioning it so your brake switch is not stuck stopping it from going into overdrive lock. So many things could be playing a role, that is why you should start on the guide troubleshooting tree like I mentioned before. It is a continuous line of steps, so you don't repeat anything or skip necessary steps.
