WooHoo...!!!! The tranny is back in. Lined up without too much problem even though we didn't have an alignment tool. Had more trouble adjusting the clutch than anything. Couldn't find a measurement for the space between the throwout bearing and pressure plate arms (is there one?).
Filled the tranny back up tonight and rolled the deive back and fourth a bit. Everything seems good so far. Planning to put the seat and access covers back in in the AM. Then we'll take her out for a good test run and see how things go.
Checked the breather and it doesn't seem to be clogged.

TM 9-2320-361-24-1 Work Package 132 has the specifics for the transmission install. You adjust the clutch free play (throwout bearing to pressure plate forks) by measuring the distance from the clutch release arm to the frame of the transmission....should be about 3.25 inches


Copy of TM work package 132 step 10....

10. Push lower end of lever (14) forward until resistance is felt. Measure distance from center of hole on lever (14) to flange of transmission (6). Measurement should be 3.25 in. (8.26 cm). Rotate lever (14) one spline at a time if necessary to obtain 3.25 in. (8.26 cm) measurement. Tighten locknut (13).

Dear Stone Mill:


Parts needed will be rear main seal, carrier seal and 6 new flywheel bolts, plus transmission to bell housing gasket. 6 ton jacks, transmission jack large or chain hoist and about 12 to 14 hours to do it right. Parts are available from White Owl Parts, Saturn Parts, and Memphis Equipment among others. My truck just had these seals replaced and it ran about $450.00 from a local ex Deuce mechanicic at a truck repair place in Clarksville, TX.
The truck runs like a watch and no leaks, plus he put the Air O Matic on for $350.00.

Once the works done your truck should be good, but usually its just due to age and deterioration that causes these gaskets to fail.

Attempted to go for a spin today. Clutch was slipping a little and didn't want to burn it up so it's still a my brothers house. Got to work 3 12 hour shifts the next 3 days, so won't get to adjust the clutch until Monday. Luckily it's supposed to be warmer than and no rain. Also found out my wipers suck and I need some window gaskets. I'm going to order the whole window assembly from Teds and get the wiper upgrade kits while Im at it. I can't wait to have this truck on the road.

i read your findings. you didnt say if you replaced the clutch disk ?

if it was covered in oil it will soak in the material and trash it.

you should have replaced the whole setup in my opinion.

why tear it all apart and chance a used known oil soaked part. :roll:

Wish I would have received and went by your advice earlier. Pulling the tranny again and installing a new clutch and pressure plate. Everything looked good especially after we cleaned i up with brake cleen. Must have soak the pads good or it is spinning out of areas we didn't get clean. Got the clutch adjusted per the manual and also checked things out through the inspection plate. Slips bad in 5th, once in awhile in 4th on hills.
Called Saturn, they're out of clutches. Called Eastern, they didn't get back to me yet. Offered a used clutch/pressure plate. I assume that isn't a good way to go though. Hopefully they'll have new in stock. Otherwise I think OD Iron might be my best bet. Any other suggestions.

I'll be proficient at pulling the tranny out now. What fun...:roll::roll::roll:

Don't know if I'd want to take a chance on something like a clutch used. I'd run it a little more with the old clutch before I tore it back down. Could be that you'll finally burn all the oil off. It won't hurt anything to run it other than the clutch and it could be bad anyway.

We cleaned everything pretty good. Can the clutch slipping cause any further damage???

Yeah, everything got plenty of oil.
I can't decide if I should pull the tranny again now and throw in a new clutch/pp or wait and see if the slippage clears up. I've only put 5-10 miles on it since we put it back together. The clutch pads looked to be in really good shape when we had it apart. I'd hate to have to pay another towing bill for this thing.

After reading others threads on the forum and talking with some other friends in the know, I've decided to put some miles on the truck and see what happens. Some said oil I didn't get out of the pressure plate is probably getting thrown around in there causing some of the slippage. My brother is driving the truck over to my house as I type this. We'll see how things go. I've got plenty of time during the week to put local miles on the truck and if I need a tow closeby, I'm sure I can get a neighbor to pull me home with one of the farm tractors.
