doesnt the rod coming out the back of the trans top cover move to the back when in reverse.it would be pretty easy to run a micro switch off of that so the lights come on in reverse only.......
It's been done ....
although this model is only applicable on trucks with air-shift TC...

However in IL., the AV plates are for GVWR of 8000 lbs or less! That being said, i do have one of my trucks with AV plates and they never said anything about the weight class ???

Gringeltaube:

That's a pretty neat arrangement. Is that switch readily availiable? Does the transmission rod have to be modified?

I like how it is a sealed switch.

Thanks, yes, it's 100% sealed and obviously eliminates the original oil seal.

.........Is that switch readily availiable?
.......
....Yes for the ball tipped N/O switch itself, NO for the rest of the body.
But you can have my blueprints to make it yourself.

Does the transmission rod have to be modified?
Yes, by cutting off the last two inches...

I would be interested in those blueprints if you still have them. :)

Very nice! Even if you dont use them for back up lights they can come in handy when working behind your truck at night. I wish I had lights on the back of my work trucks, but I have too long a list of projects and too little time. :)
As we know its a treat to have the rear lights available for hitching up, working or something... I dont know or care the laws here about it, My lights work on a transmission swtch as usual and someplaces legal requirement...

They also have a timer switch connected so they may be turned on as desired for working back there or whatever. The timer gives me up to 60 min 'on' time so if I forget to switch off they will just go out when the time I selected runs out. Or if I'm back there longer its a minor anoyance but I'll just reset the timer on again.
Anyway the point is they cant be forgotten and left on indefinitely.

Where are these blueprints G? I'd really like to do that on my rides. I'd like to run them off a relay and operate the relay through the light switch so that they only work in service brake or service drive mode.

....Just a few drawings with dimensions, to show what I did on mine...

Power for the B/U-lamps comes from wire #37 (aux., tractor only) which has its own circuit breaker.

Did the marker light install this weekend - gotta change the lense inserts around - just wanted to get them mounted and will wire in later.

For back up we have Bureau of Mines quality back up alarms - these suckers are loud - remember that move Shreakers ? You do not want to be anywhere except in the cab with your ear plugs in when you flip it in reverse - you will drop to the ground with blood pouring out of your ears. Do you think over 200 db is loud ?
Too busy holding their head to look for back up lights.

Thanks again for sharing. Has anyone made any of these recently? Is anyone selling them? Are there any machinists here on the board that would be willing to make a few of them for us?

Interesting install. I don't know if I would have done it though, as most state motor vehicle codes grandfather the older vehicles to only require what they had on them when built. An inspector in West Virginia tried that stunt many years ago on an M422A1 that I had at the time, and looking at the code citatation and drawings on the wall of his office, I pointed out no call out for either turn signals (which he was trying to bust my chops on) and no backup or license plate lights. Fortunately the shop owner could read and realized they were not needed to pass inspection. IF, however, you chose to put them on the vehicle and they did not work at time of inspection, it would not pass. So my theory has been if not required, do not install the units, as they are just something more to go wrong.

Cheers,

Kyle F. McGrogan:-?

I know alot of you are concerned about the vehicle has to be in reverse in order to trigger the lights, well what about a micro switch mounted under the boot on a pedestal that is triggered when the shifter is in the reverse position... I literally just thought of it, and kinda jotting it down will help me remember... I'm going to try tinkering with it sooner or later, I'll let you guys know how it goes....
