How noisy is your 6.2 lit. M1009

How noisy is your 6.2 lit M1009? My M1009 is a lot noisyer than any new diesel truck i have ever been around or in. Witch i am shure they are going to be. :wink:

I wear ear plugs if I'll be going over 45.... I had noticed that it makes my ears ring at freeway speed, and that's not good.

Not loud enough so I cut the mufflers off.

After I almost went def and decided that was not such a good idea I had a new exhaust put on. I don't think they are too loud and I owned a duramax lmm. Now those are quiet.

OK i had the farm service truck's pump rebuilt and the noise difference was amazing! simple amazing, it went from a clack truck to a quiet normal diesel truck. i called the pump rebuild place and they said because the advances in the pumps stop working over time, i will say when the truck is cold and on the high idle solenoid , the pumps cold advance is also activated this does make the motor more clacky, as soon as the motor warms up and the cold advance comes off and the high idle comes off (these are on the same circuit) the motor quiets down. very noticeable difference. How many of you with loud trucks have had your pumps rebuilt? I'm curious

He may have something, but I think it has a lot to do with timing. I think the engines with more advance knock harder. I wish my M1008 was a little louder, my first M1008 really banged away. It also had much more power and better fuel economy. Glen

When you are driving 75-80 MPH it gets much quieter! On my last road trip I found that out and I did it for seven hours straight each way stopping only for fuel once each way. My step-mom that has a newer diesel truck says it is quiet and my wife says my step-mom is deaf. So it is all a matter of opinion or point of view.

My M1008 is not too bad up to 45mph, above that it gets very loud, I always wear ear plugs, at 60 the noise peaks, like the honk of a motorcycle wide open, then drops off again at 65. When I ripped out the floor mats and put in bed liner it sounded completley different, now it sounds like an accessory is about to grind off, like a loose transmission part or a bad vacuum pump pod. I think these are noiser on the inside, rolling down both windows helps me. I have a rebuilt injector pump but old injectors, 40k miles.

I was in these when they were brand new, (FT Drum, 1987) and they were really loud then as well. I was driving with a Sgt Dricsoll and he just said to roll up the window, like get over it kid. I was sure we would not make it to our destination, but we did.

Hard to tell, my ears are old and abused. To me the truck makes pleasant noises aplenty but my sons (ages 9 and 10) say it's noisy and has an echo in the truck. Based on what they say, I need something for sound deadener to line the floor pans and a carpet kit - I love the truck but I definitely don't need to lose anymore hearing.

Mine is much quieter on the freeway now that I finally got my 700r4 working well!!:lol: Although on a cold morning its very loud until the cold advance goes off.

When a new pump is installed, one would normally adjust the timing.

I agree with Kenny that pump timing is the deciding factor. There is one way to check, make some adjustments. As long as you mark a starting point, you have a reference to go back to.

Loosen the three pump mounting bolts and rotate the pump. Towards the driver side to advance and towards the passenger side to retard. A pry bar on the back of the ip(where lines attach) will give you some good leverage and allow small movements. A millimeter or two is all you should need in any direction.

I haven't had to adjust the timing on any of my CUCVs. I've done this on my '96 burb with a 6.5L, electronic IP; but the same idea works for the 6.2l. The only difference is you'll need to hear the results vs the scan tool I used on my 'burb to verify the changes.

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING!!! Make small adjustments, tighten, and test. Repeat as needed. Do not attempt to run the engine while the IP is loose. Do not attempt to move the IP while the engine is running. You have been warned.

I find the 1009 is quieter on idle with the roof off, the noise seems to resonate in the cabin. yeah i must say noise peaks around 65, but dropps off once you break 70 ish, either that or its overcame by wind noise:grin:

Y'kno, when I first got the truck I thought the exhaust had a huge manifold leak, haha

When my 1009, (Well. used to be, now my sons) is cold, its real noisy, SCARY NOISY !! After it's warm, it quiets down, real nice and runs good !!!

Im removing the stereo i just installed cause i cant hear it anyway. I got the pipe stack in the back and a sliding back glass it gets a little loud :p its all good
