I am replacing the seals in my winch and have a Questions about the sealant on the bolts that hold the input shaft housing on the case. They go all the way into the gear box and when I took them out they have some type of sealant on them, does any body know want I need to use to reseal the bolts so gear oil will not leak out the bolt holes?
I do not think it is RTV, but it may be.

Thanks!!

I didn't put anything on the bolts when I rebuilt my winch. Haven't had any leaks. If I put anything I'd use pipe dope or Teflon tape. They are made to seal threads.

I have one more question. On the big side cover plate on the left side of the winch should I get a gasket or just use RTV to make a gasket?

Thanks!!

You'll have to have a gasket or two. It is required to set the proper clearance of the shaft. I made my own gaskets and think I used two. The end plates on the brake end and input will also have to be shimmed with gaskets.

Indian Head is still available at my local NAPA. I use it on gaskets from time to time.
