    White smoke

Mine takes a while to start, it turns over just fine but does not fire when its cold. I also see puffs of white smoke while its turning over, but then when it does start I get alot of dark smoke.

    Torque converter going out?? m1008

No, it does it without the brakes being applied as well, they have no effect on the noise. Thanks for all the things to check, now my routine maintenance list is getting bigger!

    Torque converter going out?? m1008

Noise only happens in 2 situations. 1. after you initially put the truck in gear, with your foot on the brake, it will sit there and grind. When you release the brake and accelerate the grinding will go away and isn't noticable anymore even as the trans is shifting gears. 2. when you are...

    Torque converter going out?? m1008

I took off the inspection cover, nothinging out of the ordinary and symtoms still persist. To recap, trans makes grinding noise when put into R or D and goes away as speed or load is increased. No noise in P or N or when going down the road. This seems to point to the TC going out. Any...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Yep, get on UPO's web page and face book page. The August trip is something you have to sign up for and there are limited spots available for legal reasons. They only do the one organized trip, but we all go out all summer long and post information about our own trips. Lots of good info. Or...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Cool, small world! We do a large trip across various parts of the UP every August. We try to show people there is much more to see right around you if you venture away from pavement a bit.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Took the army truck on a nice 4 day, 500 mile trip around the UP last week. We started at Whitefish Point and ended at Fayette using backroads and trails as much as possible. Slideshow here: UPO 2012

    Torque converter going out?? m1008

Hmmm, sluggishness might be hard to notice on an 08 with 37s :) But really I don't think it feels sluggish. I did read something about the bolts backing out and had planned on checking them. It makes the noise under no load and goes away when throttle is applied, so you only hear it at or...

    Torque converter going out?? m1008

Was reading through a few old threads on torque converters as I think I might have a TC related problem. The trans seems to operate just fine, but there is a terrible "grinding" noise when shifted into R or D, there is no noise in P or N. The noise seems to go away as RPM increases, but at...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately? - Part 1

Loaded up my 1970's Bethany camper for the first time last night, planning on a week long expo style camping trip next week.

    M1008 Spacers

Lots of people run spacers, but honestly the recentered H1's are the way to go. There are a few different vendors that offer them, trailworthy fab seems to have fair prices. Take the money you would spend on the spacers and put them towards new wheels. But on the other hand, if you don't need...

hacking the fenders to make 39 inch Swampers fit

I cut about 3" from the back and 2 from the front, I even cut away the lower part of the inner fender on the rear. I do plan on doing a 2" lift in the near future just to replace the stock springs with something better. Here is somewhat of an ongoing build thread...

37x13.5R17's... The only place they rub is on the pitman arm on right turns...

Never run anything but Spicer u-joints!! The auto parts store joints never last, not even in a DD street truck. Well, here is what " I have done lately"... I got out and put a little mud on it and flex tested to see if the tires rub anywhere. They do hit the inner fender well in the bed on...

How fast does a M1008 go?

I've wondered on driving 55 as well with my 08. With stock tires it seems like the motor is just screaming past 50. I just put on some 37's and took it out for a ride and drove 55-60, it still sounded really loud, its hard to tell though if its just the diesel being loud or its really reving...
