I dropped one in my M1008 back in 2008. The best thing I ever added was a torque arm set up from WFO Concepts. Even the 10 leaf rear springs would wrap up about 2" at the pinion when I eased off the clutch pedal in first gear. I could also feel the whole truck twisting and now it's smooth as...
You can mate an Allison to a 6BT, but again, there goes the "if you have enough time and money" deal. There's a build thread over on 4btswaps dot com right now where a guy is doing a 6BT/6 spd Allison in a 78 Chevy crew cab.
Nice! Somebody posted a link to my 4BT Swaps dot com build!
BTW, the 4BT is about on par with the 6.2, weight wise. 6BT is about 1100-1200 lbs. the 4BT has been known to have a killer vibration at idle, but they're fun little motors. Easy on fuel too! The only difference in the area around the...
The death wobble is probably a combination of ball joints and caster. What's the caster measure? I believe you'll want about 5* positive (top of knuckle leaning back, towards the rear) on a D44, 3* positive on a D60. Panhard bar looks good, just make sure when you swap in the D60 that it's...
richingalveston: Check my sig :D
The 4L80E is kind of a pain to do with the 6BT. Again, not impossible, but expensive and still not very strong, even after upgrades. I'm probably close to 900 ft/lbs at less than 3000 rpm. That'll usually tear the insides of a GM auto apart, if not, possibly...
Using zero rates to move the front axle forward would almost require crossover steering.
BTW, if you need a steering box brace, I have an extra laying around.
Nice!
I rolled Herculine in the cab of my M1008 a few weeks back. Still has some smell, but the windows have been rolled up all the time. Come summer and once I drive it some more and have stuff in and out of the cab, I'm sure it'll go away. It cuts down on some noise too, which is good for...
Not to hi-jack, but the P30s used a fluid dampening motor mount. Most, if not all, of the 4BT to K5/10/20 swaps I've seen were done with self built motor mounts. It's not impossible, but also not a drop in. TN Diesel may make motor mounts for a 4BT.
Like they said, you don't have to, but it's always a good idea. A good set of stainless braided hoses will firm up your brake pedal too and make them (the brakes) work and feel even better than they already do.
I have a kit from WFO and one from ORD. I'd buy from WFO again in a heartbeat. Much faster shipping to NC, cheaper, and they're quicker to help you over the phone than ORD in my past few experiences. I get stuff from WFO in California in 2 days. Their tie rod ends are also of a better quality...
Editor of FourWheeler Magazine, John Cappa, has a 70s model J truck on 'rocks and 49" Iroks that's real low to the ground. Set up for ALL down travel on the suspension. It's soooo freakin sweet!

Granted, I know this isn't exactly what you're asking, but...
I had considered a turbo on my 6.2. I could only find one around 2000 bucks or so, new. So, I looked for used ones and quickly got frustrated with the half assedness I found. I'd have to find or fab new parts to make it all work...
I've run off the shelf Type F fluid in several GM autos that I've built. It works very well and delivers a noticeably firmer shift. If you read the back of the B&M bottle, it'll say meet or exceed Type F specs. Sorta sounds like it's re-labeled Type F to me. Nay-sayers will probably say it'll...
