What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

I drive it maybe 8 times a year. I just don't have time. I have it registered historic. Historic insurance is a PITA here in NJ, every agency I contacted wants it garaged or puts too many restrictions on its use. I think at this point, I just would rather buy a new(or used depending on what...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

What have I done to my 5 ton in 2 months? Nothing. It's time to sell it. I had my fun with it, but I just don't use it enough, and insurance costs are way too high here in NJ for a "toy".

    What have I done now?

I almost had second thoughts when the seller of the truck pulled into the parking lot of the DMV to sell it to me. I said "holy crap, this thing is bigger than I thought...". But now it has been in my driveway for 2 years, it doesn't seem that big anymore.

    Air Brake Service Needed

Some of the ones on fleabay don't have the bottom port on the valve threaded either. I know from experience. I ended up tapping it out myself, used it like that for a while, and then swapped it for a non-chinese OEM Q2 just for peace of mind. My truck still leaks a tiny bit of air out of the...

    M939 No Spring Brake Ops - and...wow...

I know of a M923 and a M936 that sat in salt water on a beach of the Delaware Bay for over 24 hours(trucks were stuck in mud) during Hurricane Sandy. The tide had come up deep enough to get water into the bed of the M923 and windshield deep on the M936. I'm willing to bet, either a state...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Pulled down some dead trees with her today. The Douglass Fir was a piece of cake. Barely had to tap the throttle to get it to come out. The other one(out in the street) was a Dogwood. Don't know why either of them died. That one was 3/4 throttle until the turbo spooled up, she left a nice...

    Axle Vents

Reporting back. I couldn't get any decent pictures of any of it really...dark under the truck and bright outside was making for some terrible pictures. The more I thought about running the vent line up the back of the intake stack, the more I thought about rain and condensation. For now, I...

    Axle Vents

This is my question about a reliable, accurate regulator in my previous post. I'd love to close a valve that shuts off the vent to atmosphere and another that pressurizes the axles a tiny bit to keep the water out. Problem is, I need a regulator, and need to route the valves somewhere they...

    Axle Vents

I'll have to crawl under the truck again and snap some pictures. It's nothing crazy or elaborate. Just did what is needed to get the job done. I'm a volunteer firefighter on a barrier island. During Hurricane Sandy our town only had a M109 with none of the proper preparations for fording or...

    Axle Vents

Finally got around to putting all of this on the truck. Used 1/4" NPT 1/8" barbed fittings for the axles, tee'd the rear two axles together, then ran a line from the front under the truck to around where the intake stack is. I used rubber vacuum line made by Gates that I got on Amazon...

    Axle Vents

Of course our local Home Depot doesn't have 1/8" NPT barbed fittings. Will have to reduce a larger one down.

    Axle Vents

Anyone know off hand what thread the axle vents are? Been meaning to add barbed fittings to the "bring home from Home Depot" list.

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Filled up the one tire with air that has a very slow leak. One of these days I have to pull it off the truck, split the rim and change the o-ring. It's much easier to just top it off whenever I use it

M929A2 Draining Air Tanks; One At A Time?

Mine function the same as you are describing. I drain 3, then 4, and when I get to the 1st and 2nd, there isn't much air left(still a decent amount, but not as much as 3 and 4 had). I don't ever get water out of my drains, but my air dryer purges a good amount out(wets the pavement when I let...

M939A2 Adjustable return fuel check valve.

Installed the valve a couple of days ago. It might be slightly faster at starting, but still not as I'd expect it to be. Smoke at idle has gone away though.
